It was with great excitement and anticipation that a crew of around 30 people descended on
N/a’an ku sê, ready to film the forthcoming advert for the new Volkswagen Golf. The
crew was made up of the production company (Gatehouse Commercials), the agency (Oglivy Cape Town)
and the client (Volkswagen) with most people from South Africa apart from the ad director, Henry
Alex Rubin, from New York
The stars of the filming are Marlice and Lucky, our three legged cheetah, with cameo's from the
wild dogs, the baboons and some of the dogs.
Two weeks previously, lucky Lucky had a special delivery to her enclosure, a car! She seemed to
like her vehicle and soon got used to getting in and sleeping in it every evening. Unfortunately
she also managed to chew the seat and use it as a toilet!
By the time the crew started filming on Sunday 22 March, Lucky was more than ready for her
starring role, although she was a little shy at first.
One of Marlice's funny memories of the filming was trying to get the dogs running along:
"It was just after lunch and very hot, the director Henry wanted to get a shot of the dogs running
along playing but they were just lying down. We threw food and called but nothing. Hendry wanted
me to run and encourage them but I knew they weren't going to so I challenge Hendry to do it. He
ran from end to end calling and encouraging the dogs and they just sat them looking at him as if
to say 'why is that man running in this heat?!"
N/a’an ku sê is delighted to be part of this advert and experience and is looking
forward to seeing the advert when it airs in Namibia in May. We'll keep you posted with a link
once it's running and look forward to developing our partnership with Volkswagen to enable us to
make a difference to the lives of the animals and people we strive to help.
A final word from Marlice,
"It was wonderful to be involved; I had great fun especially on the quad bikes. Usually I am behind
the cameras trying to get the animals to do what is needed. I really enjoyed working with the whole
crew.
I am also thrilled to have this opportunity to help educate the public
about our efforts in conservation as well as helping to provide funds to enable us to continue
our carnivore conservation and
research project and release more animals back to the wild."
